This time of year screams COZY to me…Halloween is past (check out my adorable Ostomy Pumpkin pin I received because I support the United Ostomy Association of America. The red center is a replica of a stoma, which is the opening that is attached to my abdomen. This miracle of medicine is my lifesaver, and does the same for millions! If you want to know more, please reach out and I will share all I know.)

In a few weeks, it will be Thanksgiving, Chanukah and Christmas, and then the New Year is upon us. The weather will become bitter cold, snowy and icy. But for now, we can enjoy the transition of the fall and wrap ourselves in warmth from garments that sort of “hug” us.

Ostomates have learned there is little we cannot wear, as long as a little thought goes into the decision-making. For me, having a very long, high-output pouch, which reaches my mid-thigh, means being a wizard at hiding. Ponchos, capes and shawls all cover what I need to be covered, and since they are so fashionable, nobody is any the wiser. In fact, so often I get positive comments because an attractive shawl draws attention to itself, not to what is beneath it. (I am reminded of nursing my daughters and ponchos and capes were fantastic for allowing me the freedom of venturing out with my babies, even if it was mealtime for them.)

As a Fashionista, I must share that ponchos and capes are more popular than ever, and have an incredible range of design. Some are classic in patterns you will recognize, such as Burberry, plaids, etc. Some are bejeweled and bedazzled with stones, gems and ribbons, while some are trimmed in feathers, fur and velvet. There is no dearth of different ways to stay comfy and stylish for all of us.

As a knitter, I am forever stretching my own concept of go-tos for the fall season. There are gorgeous yarns available and patterns that button down the front, slip overhead, or are asymmetrical and held with a clip, button or pin. If you love to create, you can probably do your holiday gift-giving right with your own 2 hands and knitting needles or crochet hook.

Enjoy the fall, since it is so fleeting, and unpredictable…one day it is summer and the next it is winter! Throw your shawl, etc., into your tote and you are good to go, regardless of what the thermometer says!
