Whether or not one has an ostomy, allergy season can take its toll on our bodies. We love the ability to be outside, walking, gardening, bicycling and may forget that with the warmer weather, comes allergic reactions to everything blossoming. Even those of us who never suffered as children with allergies may find a new sensitivity. The good news is there are many medicines and holistic preparations which should ameliorate the suffering of watery eyes and running noses.
For every yin, however, there is a yang, and although allergy medications and preparations dry out the excess drippiness, they can cause health issues for ostomates. As you know from some of my blogs and will learn more in-depth in my just-released book, SO MUCH MORE THAN MY OSTOMY: LOVING MY PERFECTLY IMPERFECT BODY! those of us with ostomies lose a great deal of fluid daily. Our anatomy is changed, and with that change, we may struggle to absorb enough fluid to feel well.
In doing some research, I discovered that antihistamines (such as Benadryl or Claritin) may decrease peristalsis (movement of food through digestion and excretion) through constipation and urinary retention. They are also known to cause dry mouth and throat and increase heart rate. Believe me when I say that I am not telling those in need to eschew taking allergy medications. It is a long season when one is suffering. I am, however, suggesting that we may need to pay attention to the delicate balance of enough fluid intake in order to aid digestion and excretion, being mindful that too much may cause a problem for those who might have a urinary retention issue.
New ostomates may notice that their pills are not fully dissolved, and part may end up in their pouch. If that is the case, revisit the dosage with your physician. It may be necessary to increase the dosage, even for a short while, as our body adjusts. Along those lines, I want to share with you that soon after my ileostomy, I found my large calcium pills in my pouch, almost fully intact. I spoke with my pharmacist who advised me to switch to petite capsules, and that has worked very well. There are usually ways around the changes we experience, but we must pay attention in order to make those changes.
We have waited so long for the trees to bloom and the flowers to blossom, and I am hoping all will enjoy the prettier days ahead. Remember to follow doctor’s orders and stay hydrated, as usual; wear lighter weight clothing so you do not sweat more than is advisable; please use sunscreen faithfully, and wear some cool shades. We love the sun for how great it makes us feel, and need to be diligent in protecting our fluid intake balance, precious skin, and beautiful eyes!
Always good advice to stay hydrated, with or without an ostomy bag. You have addressed the size of pills for ostomates, an issue that non- ostomates would not have considered. I always learn from your blogs and marvel at your optimism.
I think staying hydrated in any situation is great sensible advice for everyone! It’s good to always have a bottle of water with you at all times. Especially at allergy season. MMK
