Acidophilus or probiotics (I will use them interchangeably in this message) are a fantastic supplement to our daily diet, and yet, many have no idea, or a misconception about the efficacy, and in my opinion, their importance. My first virulent small bowel obstruction and resection in 1993 brought many changes to my life, and the addition of probiotics is one of the positive ones. At that time, my colorectal surgeon ordered acidophilus for me, and I have embraced it from that point on. When I had peritonitis and was being infused with toxic antibiotic cocktails, I believe they were part of my salvation!
Why add this supplement to your daily diet? There are several reasons that it makes a huge impact, the most important being the gut is one of the major components of the immune system. As we do everything in our power to protect ourselves from Covid, flu and other illnesses, adding a probiotic can certainly make a positive difference. Fortifying the gut with billions of healthy intestinal flora cannot be overstated. Just the confidence it provides that another healthy layer is added is so positive.
Additionally, it has been shown that regular intake of probiotics can aid in maintaining the balance of intestinal flora. That translates to less abdominal pain and cramping, discomfort from powerful deleterious bacteria. I envision billions of little armaments fighting and beating invaders on my behalf.
Typically, I take one pill in the morning and one in the evening. In the past, these preparations needed to be refrigerated, but over the years, newer technology has allowed for them to be kept on the shelf with other vitamins and minerals. That helps to ensure they are taken regularly, rather than forgotten in the refrigerator. If I am battling cramping or signs that my digestive or immune system is in distress or overworking, I will add another dose at lunchtime. There is one caveat to keep in mind: if you are taking an antibiotic, do NOT take your probiotic at the same time. Wait 3-4 hours. This is because the efficacy of both may be compromised at a time when it is absolutely necessary they be at the top of their game to perform their respective duties. I add another dose of acidophilus midday just to reinforce that I am getting all the protection against that awful gas and distention so frequently associated with an antibiotic.
Lastly, I want to add that I keep Papaya Mint in my arsenal against the gas and distention that can come from a course of antibiotics or food that is difficult to digest and causes pain, or a wicked case of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Chewing two has saved me, as well as those with whom I have shared my stash, countless times. That “gassy belly” is so miserable, and can be comforted quickly.
It used to mean a trip to the Health Food Store for these preparations, but they have become very mainstream. I like to rely upon the pharmacy where I have confidence in their choice of products, since there are so many available to us. And finally, many assume that dairy yogurt is a sufficient source of probiotics, but I am wary. Enjoy your yogurt and continue to derive all you can from it, but assume that adding an additional dose or two of designated probiotics will be worth the effort!
Thank you once again for your information about probiotics. I take them regularly and feel they aid in bowl regularity.
Thanks for the recommendation of Papaya Mint, Ellyn.
That’s a new one for me, and an easy fix to a common problem.
As always, your experience, knowledge, and common sense yield valuable take-aways.
