At our monthly Ostomy Support Group meeting recently we discussed hernia prevention, again! It is the topic that requires a conversation often, because an ostomy, by its very nature, is a hole in the abdomen that allows bowel to protrude. The surgeon creates the hernia in our case, and the area around the stoma or opening, is susceptible to increasing in size. That increase can cause pain and other potential problems with bowels.
Many with hernia concerns use a hernia belt, which we frequently see on those in construction or positions with heavy lifting. They are lifesavers for the “normal” population. The gyms are full of people wearing them for obvious reasons…nobody wants to work out and cause harm to their abdomen, resulting in surgery, which will require NO lifting of weight.
Ostomates are at increased risk, but we are fortunate enough to have hernia belts designed for us. They have a space for our pouch to safely rest. To obtain the best fit, a visit with an Ostomy Nurse is recommended to measure properly the waist, contours, pouch location, etc., but it is worth the effort. Additionally, there are many hernia belts for ostomates on the market, and that guidance cannot be stressed enough.
My belt is by Nu Hope and I wear it for Pilates and any time spent in the gym. In one of our groups, Lavinia Shoji, our wonderful Ostomy Nurse who consults with us, recommended laying flat as we put on the correct belt for the most support. I find that not only does it offer support for my abdomen, but for my lower back, as well.
I encourage all ostomates to obtain a properly sized belt and WEAR it! Due to my many abdominal surgeries, I have had three hernia repairs, even before my ostomy. The surgery is something we want to, and can, avoid.
Stay healthy, strong, and smart as you do so! Treasuring our one body is our primary responsibility so we can enjoy all life has to offer.
I also have a NU HOPE belt. I wear it whenever I’m doing any type of exercise. Thanks for the tip about putting it on lying down.I’ll try doing that next time.
