We all want to be healthy for a myriad of reasons. Not the least of these is we do not want to be dependent upon the medical community. Truly, it is so frightening! Not only do we have to worry about what is causing us to feel poorly, but we have to navigate waters that are fraught with peril. Make one wrong turn, and we may be unable to get the help we need. The keepers of the gate to doctors can make or break us.
I was very fortunate for many years because I had long-standing relationships with “the front” of the medical offices I frequented. Regardless of how poorly I felt, I tried my hardest (not always successfully) to find a kind word or have a pleasant look on my face while asking for much-needed help. There were times when I felt I would burst out crying, but knew I had no choice but to be soft and respectful, kind and understanding.
The medical community seems to have changed, and it is harder for patients and staff to get along. Perhaps it has to do with the poor ratio of patients to staff. There are so many of us, and so few there to assist us. Regardless, tempers flare and once that happens, civility is lost. Nobody feels good when that happens.
Although this doesn’t always work, I try to be appreciative of the help I receive. And I express my gratitude when it is deserved. The sheer number of patients that need help must be overwhelming to them, and it is easy to forget the burden they have. Of course, as we are at our most needy and miserable, we would benefit greatly from a little attention and kindness.
In my dream world, where everything goes as it should, I imagine that those with need to see the doctor will do so, and that everyone will be treated with kindness and respect. Of course, this is a dream, because reality is we are all just human beings…some are great, caring and helpful, while others are overworked, overwhelmed and overdone. Maybe if we all do our best to see each other better, with patience and understanding, we will be more successful. Fingers crossed, and STAY WELL!
I more often judge my care by the front desk, rather than my doctors. If I can’t get empathy and reasonable response time then I am frustrated and let my Doctors know. Many have call centers who are not trained to assess the situation and how quickly you need to be seen. I dislike call centers!
